Book Club Discussion
Author, Hope Jahren
We had 15 people for our discussion of Lab Girl today in the library's Curran history room.
About 3/4 of the group really enjoyed the book throughout, enjoying the author's writing style and stories of her scientific discoveries and journeys. A few found it difficult to get into and a few people skipped around or just gave up after a few chapters.
Hope Jahren, the author makes science easy to understand and her love of the natural world is truly infectious. We focused quite a bit on her relationship with her partner in all things lab related, Bill. Having met at the University of Berkeley, in a soils class when Hope was a graduate teaching asst, and Bill an undergraduate. She saw his scientific acumen right away and snapped him up for her lab at the Georgia Tech. From there they went to John Hopkins' University, then Norway, and finally to a lab in Hawaii.
Jahren also discussed the difficulties of having bipolar disorder, especially while pregnant. She writes movingly about her son's birth and how her love for him in boundless.
4 out of 5 stars!
