Book Club Review
H is for Hawk
A group of 8 gathered to discuss Helen Macdonald's impressive memoir H is for Hawk on Tuesday, March 20th. Macdonald, a British academic, naturalist, falconer, and illustrator, took a deep dive into grief the year her father, a renowned press photographer died unexpectedly. Having been obsessed with falcons and hawks since childhood, Macdonald drives to Scotland and purchased a young hawk, who she later named Mabel, to train. She immerses herself so deeply in the training, re-reading and contemplating T.H. White's The Goshawk as she goes. While book group members appreciated Macdonald's stellar writing and learned a lot about falconry, and perseverance, it was often intense and graphic. Overall, a worthwhile, though challenging read.
